Since 1995, social psychologists have shown that among the many obstacles black and Latino students face in an academic setting is a psychological one, something referred to as "stereotype threat." This article describes a simple psychological intervention that research has shown can narrow the test-score differences caused by stereotype threat.
This adaptation from Student Academic Mindset Interventions: A Review of the Current Landscape and Addressing achievement gaps with psychological interventions discusses an experiment in which researchers tested whether adding an explanation that a student was being held to a high standard could mitigate stereotype threat when the student received critical feedback on a writing assignment. It can be used in Part 2 of the Exploring academic mindsets professional learning activity.
