Hurricanes
Students learn what causes hurricanes and what engineers do to help protect people from destruction caused by hurricane winds and rain. They also learn how levees work, and build their own levees and test them out. This lesson is part of a larger unit on natural disasters; all of the lessons provide a real-world engineering context, and foster understanding about what engineers study and create to help people live with natural hazards.
