Geology: Mapping
These resources support teachers and students as they explore geologic mapping in high school Earth Science classes.
Included Resources
A series of resources to teach mapping skills, including topographic and geologic maps to students. (This site is full of other earth science teaching resources as well.) Provided by the U.S. Geologic Survey.
Scope and Sequence connections: 7:1 Geology and Earth Science: Geology: Mapping.
A topographic map, or "topo map," is a way to show mountains and valleys on a flat piece of paper. Students make a scientifically accurate topographic maps using playdoh and dental floss with this task from NASA.
This activity asks students to practice drawing contour lines on various maps. The exercise starts students with level 1 questions and slowly builds to more challenging application questions about slope, gradient, drawing profiles, streams and other regents aligned tasks.
