Adapted Physical Education Guidance

Physical Education is a required subject for all students in Grades K-12 in New York State. Students must take PE every year and PE must be specially designed for students with disabilities if necessary. This document provides an overview of the process by which Adapted Physical Education (APE) is provided to students who require it, including student assessment, documentation, and applicable local, state, and federal laws. This quick reference guide is designed for use by teachers of physical education, school administrators, and other school staff (such as school psychologists and Individualized Education Program (IEP) team members) involved in the provision of specially designed instruction to students. It includes links to resources that help educators gain a fuller understanding of Adapted Physical Education instruction for students and the delivery of instruction as well as the general K-12 physical education program.
