The standards-to-skills loop
This document provides an overview of the Standards-to-Skills Loop as a way of mapping the path to rigorous standards through attainable performance tasks. It is described here as a loop because the loop follows a multistep path in which a standard is first broken down—defined, distilled, introduced, and explored in detail—before it is then gradually reassembled in the process of practicing and building to the assessment task. The Standards-to-Skills Loop helps teachers to establish clear skill learning objectives and provides tiered support for skill growth when designing a unit and the activities and culminating tasks that form that unit. The process is accompanied by use guide for teachers with each step broken down.
