School Time Lab (STL) is a two-year school-centered initiative that provides schools with professional learning supports and coaching as they assess, design and implement changes to their four year academic program so that their programs provide equitable access for all students to courses and experiences that are integral for postsecondary success while also supporting each school’s unique vision and goals. This overview details the approach and process designed by the STL team.
The School Time Lab: Academic Programming Design Consortium (STL: APDC) is a two-year, school-centered initiative that supports schools in maximizing how they use time during the school day. The aim of the initiative is to help strengthen school-based practices, create meaningful learning experiences to prepare students for college and careers, and inform policy implications. “Leading Through Change: A Conversation about Academic Programming with School Time Lab Principals” is a video documenting a conversation between several of the principals from the first STL cohort. The discussion includes their role as school leaders in the academic redesign process, including the creation of goals and priorities, the identification and implementation of trade-offs and the creation of buy-in from the school community.

Over the past several years, the School Time Lab (STL) team has partnered with high schools across the City to design and implement academic programs that provide equitable access for all students to rigorous courses and experience that graduate students college and career ready. The STL team organizes professional learning sessions with various content experts, coordinates inter-visitations to innovative schools with strong scheduling practices, provides on-site coaching to school teams, and offers targeted supports as needed. In order to learn more about the impact of their work, the STL team conducted interviews with five of the 17 schools that participated in Cohort 1 or Cohort 2 of the initiative. The interviews highlighted important lessons around the design of their academic programs and scheduling practices influenced by the STL work, and surfaced important feedback about design decisions in their professional learning. This document summarizes the finding of the interviews.
