NYCDOE: Passport to Social Studies - grade 1, unit 1

This is the first unit of Grade 1 Scope and Sequence, titled: Family and Community are Important. This unit was developed by a team of DOE staff and teachers, in collaboration with social scientists and cultural partners. Representative lessons from this unit include:
- Lesson 1 - students explore what is a family are who are its members. Students develop an understanding and appreciation of complex family structures.
- Lesson 4 - students define, identify, and explain the importance of family values and how they shape cultures and communities.
- Lesson 11 - students explore national holidays to understand how communities commemorate and celebrate the historical significance of important people and events.
- Lesson 12 - students understand how symbols represent important ideas by studying and analyzing American symbols.
The unit culminates with a post-assessment where students demonstrate knowledge of how and why families and communities are important.
