Opening: Strengthening persistence

This document provides an overview of the premise for building students’ persistence to tackle challenging math tasks. The lessons and insights described, however, extend beyond the math classroom and can be applied across content areas by fostering a growth mindset and providing instruction on independent problem solving, metacognition, and strategies for improvement—students become not only confident in their ability to learn but indeed hungry to learn..  The document also provides background and context for the pilot school North Queens Community High school and the impact work done by the staff on this focus area has had.
