Mastery-based building blocks
This document discusses the pedagogical foundation for teachers to identify focal skills around which to design lessons and assessments, including four key attributes of rigorous expectations; multiple assessment opportunities; individualized instructional support; and opportunities for students to monitor and reflect. When implemented well, mastery-based approaches produce the type of learning experiences that researchers have long associated with stronger student outcomes, particularly with students who felt alienated from school in the past. Students participating in a mastery-based model receive feedback that is timely, actionable, and individualized, and they advance through their studies upon demonstrating skills rather than as a default for time spent in school.
