Slippery slopes

This mathematics packet contains a curriculum-embedded Common Core–aligned task and instructional supports. The task is embedded in a 2–3 week unit on proportional relationships, linear equations, and slopes. In this unit, students will build on previous work with proportional relationships and unit rates. Students will deepen their understanding of functions and linear equations. In this series of tasks, students will graph proportional relationships and interpret the unit rate as the slope of the line. In addition to deriving and interpreting the equation y = mx + b, students will construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Students will also explore similar triangles and use them to explain why the slope is constant between any two points on a given line.
