The length of this unit is approximately 2-3 weeks. Students will develop an understanding of dividing fractions by fractions by building upon the conceptual knowledge gained in grade 5 of dividing fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions (5.NF7). Students use the meaning of fractions, the meaning of multiplication and division, and the relationship between multiplication and division to understand and explain why the procedures for dividing fractions make sense. Following this unit, students can use this knowledge to reason about ratio and rate problems. In the Common Core-aligned task "Share My Candy," students show their ability to interpret and compute quotients of fractions in a real‐ world problem. Students may choose to perform the division of the fractions using either visual models or numerical symbols.
