Grade 11 ELA: Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man

This resource contains a two-part culminating performance task aligned to the Common Core Standards (CCLS). The task is embedded in a nine week unit that outlines a course of study in which students analyze the motif of Jazz in Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man. In the task, students will: 1) Write an informative essay analyzing how Ellison uses the motif of Jazz to develop his theme of invisibility in the novel The Invisible Man. Prior to writing the essay, students will study the elements of jazz and analyze how Ellison interprets these elements through the use of parallel literary devices. 2) Additionally, students will summarize the most important points in their paper and will produce an informational podcast that serves as a guide to how jazz is used in the novel.
