Urban heat islands

This collection consists of resources for This CSTEP Playbook: Urban Heat Islands. It is designed to support middle school teachers in designing and carrying out projects that investigate climate change through the lens of monitoring the urban heat island effect in New York City and other urban areas. It is a part of a series of playbooks that were developed by New York City Department of Education teachers and staff members from external partner organizations in the 2020-21 school year. The collection contains the CSTEP Playbook: Urban Heat Islands and associated recorded webinar.

In this webinar, viewers learn about the urban heat island effect, and how urban heat islands cause some urban communities to be particularly vulnerable to the effects of excessive heat and climate change. Viewers will learn protocols for investigating the urban heat island effect using infrared thermometers and will also learn about resources from the GLOBE program and NASA that can support their students in exploring the urban heat island effect and advocating for changes to mitigate urban heat islands in their communities.
