Little Things Are Big: Jesús Colón

Puerto Rican writer Jesús Colón describes a time when his awareness of stereotypes influenced his decision-making. From Facing History.

In this lesson, students reflect on the power of being labelled and use Jesús Colón’s essay to reflect on their own experiences of being misjudged.

This collection includes a video and reflection questions to be used alongside, and not instead of, the lesson plan. To be adapted to fit the needs of your students and class.

Included Resources

In this 45-minute professional learning activity, participants will use an excerpt from  Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED talk “The Danger of a Single Story” to reflect on the ways in which we form predetermined narratives (or, “stories”) about one another, and how these “stories” impact learning and educational equity.
