Developing writing skills through career research

This collection, developed by Urban Dove Team Charter School, is a look into how the school integrates writing at two points in the career-exploration research process. The result is a three-paragraph essay and a cover letter to a job found through online research. The essay helps students reflect and focus after completing an interest inventory and before conducting additional career research. The cover letter - simulating an application to an actual job posted on line - helps students synthesize their interests and their research.

This resource should be reviewed first, as the document contains an overview of the entire practice, helpful resources/samples others can use or adapt, a “How To” guide with tips for implementation, standards covered, and background information on the Urban Dove Team Charter School and the educators who helped to develop this practice. Use this resource in conjunction with the CUNY LINCT to success workbook.

This workbook, provided by CUNY LINCT to Success a college access, transition and success program, is the Career Research Project referenced throughout Urban Dove’s unit. The activities within are aligned to career exploration and self assessment, but are only available to NYCDOE employees due to copyright restrictions.
