NYCDOE: Passport to Social Studies - grade 4, unit 1 - ADA version
This is the WCAG 2.0 accessible version.
This is the first unit of the Grade 4 Scope and Sequence, title: The Geography of New York State. This unit was developed by a team of DOE staff and teachers, in collaboration with social scientists and cultural partners. Representative lessons from this unit include:
- Lesson 4 - students create a flipbook to show the relationship between their neighborhood compared to the larger borough, city, state, country, continent, hemisphere, and world.
- Lesson 8 - students identify the five most populated cities in New York by comparing a population map to a political map and discuss the factors that many have contributed to those cities having large populations.
- Lesson 10 - students compare and contrast geographic features of the New York City region.
The unit culminates in a Performance Based Assessment that asks students to write an expository essay comparing and contrasting geographic features in the New York City region and another selected region.
